Russian River Brewing Company - Pliny the Elder

"Pliny the Elder is brewed with Amarillo, Centennial, CTZ, and Simcoe hops. It is well-balanced with malt, hops, and alcohol, slightly bitter with a fresh hop aroma of floral, citrus, and pine. Best enjoyed FRESH! That is why we make it in such limited supply. Actual bottling date is printed on each bottle!

After much research in beer books, brainstorming, and deliberation, we came up with "Pliny the Elder". Pliny, the man, lived in the first century- 23 to 79 A.D. According to our brewing references, he and his contemporaries either created the botanical name or at least wrote about Lupus Salictarius, or hops, currently known as Humulus Lupulus. That was a very early reference to an important part of any Double IPA! Pliny the beer has now become one of our flagship brews!

Cheers to the scholar, historian, officer, writer, and Roman Naturalist- Pliny the Elder!"

Not my best pour, I know :(
Brewery: Russian River Brewing Company
Beer name: Pliny the Elder
Beer Style: Double IPA
ABV: 8.0 %

Somewhere around 5 years ago this beer changed my palate and the way I tasted beers. After first hearing about Pliny, it took several months before I was able to try it, so my anticipation was high. Has anyone ever recommended a movie to you? They try and build it up saying how amazing it is and every time they see you they remind you of it. Maybe they can't even control themselves and start reciting lines from the movie. Your anticipation builds and you go into this movie expecting something great. Then when you watch it, it just seems like an average movie. Well that did NOT happen here and Pliny definitely lived up to its hype.

The aroma is packed with citrus and piney excellence. Although my pour did not do Pliny any justice, the body is gorgeous. The bold and rich gold body is crowned with a pearly white head. My first thought of the flavor is that it is FRESH!! The malt base compliments the hops perfectly, giving the initial flavor a slight sweetness along with a light bitterness. Then your palate is greeted with a refreshing bitterness done to perfection. Excellent beer!

The good folks over at Russian River have been brewing some fantastic beers since 2004 and the demand for their beers keeps increasing. But expanding their production has not gone any further than mild conversation between owners Vinnie and Natalie Cilurzo. As much as I would like Pliny or Temptation or any other their beers to be readily available,  I think some of the mystique behind their beers is that they are so exclusive, unless you live near the brewery. All I know is that every time I see a Russian River beer at the local bottle shop, I'm getting it. And you should too!

Hint: There are times when liquor stores and bottle shops here in San Diego have some Pliny in their back stock, you just have to ask them about it.

Russian River Brewing - Damnation

"Inspired pretty much by Duvel and other strong golden ales of Belgium. It is medium-bodied, has a fruity/banana bouquet, and a dry, spicy finish."

Beer Style: Strong Golden Ale

I am a hop head. Which is to say that I love hoppy beers. In fact I delight in most beer styles; Stouts, Porters, IPA's, double IPA's, Browns, Sours, Pale Ales and Reds. But I say most beer styles because there is one style that still intimidates my palate. Belgians. It is the great divide between craft beer drinkers or so it has been in my experience. My craft beer friends are either hop heads, who love beers that reek of pine and citrus and finish with a refreshing bitterness, or they prefer the spicy or sweet caramel taste with hints of bananas or lemons of Belgian style beers.

That's not to say I won't drink Belgians, my palate just doesn't crave their taste. But I knew I had to delve deep into Belgians in order to expand my craft brew repertoire. There are a ton of great craft breweries out there and there are some that elevate the status-quo and every beer in their line up is top notch. Russian River is one of those breweries, I have yet to have a mediocre beer from them, so I decided to play it safe and try their Belgian.

The beer looks great. Gleaming white head mounts the crisp golden body, giving it a sleek look. The aroma is sprinkled with lemon and bananas with a light malt scent. My nose found hints of vanilla also but that could be due to my lack of experience in Belgians. The initial flavor was sweet with a light bitterness and ended with a smooth and fruity yet slightly bitter taste. To my surprise the beer was great! If most other Belgian Blondes taste like this, Damnation could be my gateway beer to Belgians. This beer comes highly recommended from this hophead.

Russian River - Consecration

"Dark Ale aged in Cabernet Sauvignon barrels from local wineries. It is aged for 4 to 8 months with black currants, brettanomyces, lactobacillus, and pediococcus added to each barrel. Rich flavors of chocolate truffle, spice, tobacco, currants, and a bit of Cabernet. Very full-bodied, sip slowly!"

Most people see Russian River and automatically think of their famous double IPA Pliny the Elder, and with good reason; the beer is amazing. But if can look past Pliny, you can see an ever growing list of other beers that are just as great. For instance, their sour beer line is one of the best I have ever seen. Sanctification, Temptation and today's reviewed beer Consecration are all truly tasteful.

Next to IPA's, sours/lambics are probably my next favorite style of beer. The carbonated sourness that laces my palate after every drink is soothing, similar to that of the bitter after taste that IPA's used to give me when I started drinking them. Although a bit more expensive than most beers - you're paying for the aging/storing time - these beers can be delightful. I almost always try and end a drinking session with a sour.

Russian River encourage you to pour Consecration slowly and I did just that. Doing that made the beer have no head but the sparkling carbonation  with the full red bodied background gave it a very appealing look. The aroma is mixed with currants and sourness. The initial light sour bitterness is finished off with a fizzy, moderate sour bitterness with hints of chocolate and red wine. It was a great way to slowly end the night.
