Our President Loves Craft Beer

Whether you love him or hate him, President Obama supports craft beer. This may be old news to you but in 2011 President Obama, inspired by home brewers across the country, bought a home brewing kit for the White House kitchen. The people of the white house went on to research home brewing at their local home brew shop and received a ton of tips. There were home brewers who already worked in the White House that offered advice as well. Their first brew was named White House Honey Brown Ale, and according to those who have tried it, is quite good.

As far as the White House knows the honey brown ale is the first alcohol brewed or distilled on White House grounds. Our first president, George Washington, was known to brew beer and distill whiskey at Mount Vernon and Thomas Jefferson made wine but there is no evidence that beer has ever been brewed at the White House.

Since the White House's first batch, they have gone onto brew a Honey Porter and a Honey Blonde last summer. They even support the theory of using locally grown resources for their beer as the honey they use comes from the first ever beehive on the south lawn of the White House. The beehive at the White House, home to an estimated 70,000 bees, pollinate the kitchen garden and provides all of the honey to the White House kitchen. Learn more about the first Beehive.

After reading about this bit of old news, it inspired me to start brewing again. Or at least brew a batch, I have a few recipes that I have been wanting to try for a long time. I guess there is no better time then now. Stay tuned and watch out for some home brew to be happening soon.
